We Love Lucca

Florence, Italy

Greetings from Florence, again!! We have had a wonderful few days here, and in the surrounding areas. The drives were breathtaking, the food is delicious, and the wine is outstanding.

We drove to Lucca, a city in Italy near Florence, to look around and enjoy the local culture. It is an ancient walled city, with homes, shops, restaurants, and churches inside the walls. The wall still surrounds the old city, but now there is also a lot newer city outside the wall. Here are some pictures:

Above, on the left, is the seal/crest for the city of Lucca. This one was embedded in a stone in the street. The picture on the right is the cathedral, which is interesting because you can see the older part and the newer (whiter) part standing together.

This circular town square, or town circle in this situation, used to be the ancient amphitheater, but now it is a community gathering spot with cafes and shops.

Gelato time!

Wine Tasting

After leaving Lucca, we visited two wineries, and enjoyed some nice snacks, good wine, and beautiful scenery.

Winery 1 - The opening picture for this blog is from this winery. We arrived a couple of minutes late and the tour had already begun. Karen, Yvonne, and I jumped out of the car and joined the tour into the vineyard, while Jon parked the car and waited for us to get back. It was a pleasant tour, and the wine was good, but the atmosphere wasn't what we expected.

The tasting was held in amongst the large wine aging barrels. Below are some other scenes from the winery and wine-tasting.

Beautiful views, good friends, food and, of course, wine!

Dinner in Florence at Trattoria il Giordino

This restaurant is known for it's Tomahawk-like steaks. We ordered one very large steak and a few sides for the four of us to share. The food was delicious!
