Mohács Background

Mohacs is a town on the Danube River in southern Hungary.  It was the site of two famous battles, one in 1526 (Ottoman Empire defeated Hungary), and one in 1687 that ended the 150-year Turkish occupation.

Mohács is home of the annual Busójárás Carnival, which marks the end of winter. The carnival happens during the last six days of February and features parades, dancing, and music.

Pécs

We will be traveling to this ancient city in Southern Hungary, close to the Croatian border. It was founded by the Romans and is known for its architectural landmarks. Pécs is the fifth largest city in Hungary, and is located on the slopes of the Mecsek mountains. While there is a lot of history that happened here, today we will be focusing more on the cultural highlights of the city, since Pécs is officially designated as the Cultural Capital of Hungary. (Budapest is the overall capital of Hungary.)

The culture of a city or state is interwoven through, and impacted by, the past history and current conditions there.

Religion:

  • Basilica of Pécs, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

  • Early Christian Mausoleum, an antique world under the city. This fascinating underground world is currently being excavated and includes burial chambers, tombs, and chapels.

  • The Pécs Mosque.

Agriculture. The growth of the agricultural business impacts the culture of the city. Pécs has had vineyards for a large part of its history. Agriculture such as fruit trees, fields of soy, and fields of flowers have become a larger part of the Pécs culture.

Yum! How was the coffee, Karen? I see you saw another Holly cousin. I’m beginning to think she lives on the wrong continent.

This blog must really be taking off if you’re publishing corrections! ;)

Big hugs to you both!
