Boi Bumbá Festival Show

Parintins, Brazil

Sunday February 23, 2025

Today we went into the town of Parintins to watch a local cultural festival, Boi Bumbá. The back ground of the festival is very fascinating, and the explanation below is from the "Brasil" website - visitbrasil.com/en/festivity/parintins-festival/

The Parintins Festival has origins that date back to the religious and folkloric festivals of the Amazon region. The legend of the boi-bumbá is the backdrop to the festival. It tells the story of an ox that is killed, revives, and enchants everyone with its joy. This gave life to an annual competition that involves the local community in a theatrical show that mixes dance, music, and a lot of emotion, with defining characteristics of Brazilian indigenous culture.

The annual festival and competition between two teams of dancers, actually takes place in June. What we watched today was one team's presentation.

Please enjoy the pictures and short videos.

Leaving Parintins today puts us on the journey back to Miami; although, we still have several stops, places, and experiences to add to the blog. Tomorrow we head towards Santerém to visit Alter do Chão that is said to be the most beautiful freshwater beach in the world and is popularly known as the Brazilian Caribbean. We'll let you know if it's true when we go ashore.
